These units differ from the ordinary synthesizers in that they don't have sounds of their own of any significance, if at all. They are used for recording MIDI into your computer which can then be assigned to any sound module or software synthesizer you have.
They should have sufficient keys, and quality features such as velocity sensitivity, aftertouch and modulation. Some keyboards include a MIDI mixing surface.
