What's wrong with using the speakers in your home system? Nothing, if you only use them to check your mixes after they've been made. For the mixing process itself, you will need proper monitors. Home speakers tend to flatter the sound with equalization settings hardwired in. Using monitors with flat frequency response will give you a more accurate sound to mix.
Monitors can be near-field for setups where you will be listening at close range, or far-field for larger spaces. They may be full range speakers, or have separate tweeter and woofer units. Choose the appropriate type for the room you have and pay attention to the sound quality specifications of frequency response and sensitivity, and power rating.
