OK, so this song is talking about getting your heart broken. Cool, the lyrics are clear, I know what they're saying.
Baby, from Justin Bieber

OK, so this song is talking about getting your heart broken. Cool, the lyrics are clear, I know what they're saying. I kind of like the refrain with the "oh-no-oh" line endings. That's pretty cool! It's actually more expressive than some of the more forced lyrics, such as, "shake me till you wake me from this bad dream."

The music is fine also. The chord progression, obviously, is as standard as they come. Nothing fancy, and for a song this simple, you don't need anything fancy. The vocals are done well, expressive and, well, simple.

So everything is nice. It's a nice song. Nothing brilliant here, nothing great here. This song will live a few months, and then it's going to be forgotten. But if you're looking for something simple and, well, nice, to listen to, have a nice three minutes.

Lyrics for Baby, from Justin Bieber:

You know you love me, I know you care
Just shout whenever, And I'll be there

You want my love, You want my heart

And we will never ever-ever be apart

Are we an item? Girl quit playing

"We're just friends"

What are you sayin?

Said there's another and looked right in eyes

My first love broke my heart for the first time,

And I was like

Baby, baby, baby oh

Like baby, baby, baby no

Like baby, baby, baby oh

Thought you'd always be mine, mine

2x

For you, I would have done whatever

And I just cant believe we ain't together

And I wanna play it cool, But I'm losin' you

I'll buy you anything, I'll buy you any ring

And I'm in pieces, Baby fix me

And just shake me til' you wake me from this bad dream

I'm going down, down, down, down

And I just can't believe, my first love won't be around

And I'm like,

Baby, baby, baby oh

Like baby, baby, baby no

Like baby, baby, baby oh

Thought you'd always be mine, mine

2x

Luda, when I was thirteen, I had my first love

There was nobody that compaired to my baby

And nobody came between us

That could ever come above

She had me going crazy

Oh I was star-struck

She woke me up daily

Don't need no Starbucks

She make my heart pound

And skip a beat when I see her in the street

And, at school, on the playground

But I really wanna see her on a weekend

She knows she got me dazing

Cuz she was so amazing

And now, my heart is breakin'

But I just keep on sayin'..

Baby, baby, baby oh

Like baby, baby, baby no

Like baby, baby, baby oh

Thought you'd always be mine, mine

If I Were a Boy -- Beyonce Knowles

This is a song that could say something, but really says very little. When I first heard the first verse, I was convinced it would say nothing at all. So I guess the fact that it says very little...
If I Were A Boy
is an accomplishment. The title is great, the premise is full of potential, but, alas, almost nothing is done with it.

Music: Absolutely nothing special about it

No clever chord progressions or unusually engaging melodic development. Really quite an ordinary song, could be a commercial.

Arrangement: average.

It follows the rules, so therefore it will sound standard on the radio. I feel that some mistakes were made, though, especially in the transition from the refrain to the verse. Could've been handled with finesse, rather than just stopping and going.

There's a lot of confusion in the lyrics (see below) about what is happening in the message. Perhaps had the arranger created clearer distinctions between those sections, it might have helped. Might have, but I doubt it.

Lyrics: all confused.

Honestly, I love the idea of "if I were a boy" being a way for a girl to really say something about the Venus-Mars gap. If the lyrics would've been consistent, and put in more details and specific things that happen in relationships, this might have gone somewhere.

Instead, it starts off with inane idiocies about wearing whatever and drinking beer with the guys. Who the * cares? There is only one line worth anything in this song, and that is "I'd listen to her cause I know how it hurts." It is true that guys don't listen easily, so that is an important place to start.

And then things get confused. Is she saying how she would be better at being a boy? Or is she saying what boys get away with? In that line, she is obviously saying how she'd be better at being a boy. She would listen. And then, she says how she just be another bad boy, "taking her for granted". And then it switches to third person without any warning, "but you're just a boy".

I really hate it when a good idea is wasted. I hate it when stupid lyrics masquerade as clever pieces of genius. The lesson? Don't waste a single word. Stick to your message, say what you want to say in a creative, engaging, consistent way. Resist the urge to put catchy line after catchy line, without being concerned about what you are saying and what the song is about. This lyricist obviously couldn't resist the urge.

Performance: wouldn't make a difference.

She's got a nice voice, but even if she'd be Barbra Streisand, I doubt she could make this song work.

If I Were A Boy lyrics

If I were a boy

Even just for a day

I’d roll out of bed in the morning

And throw on what I wanted and go

Drink beer with the guys

And chase after girls

I’d kick it with who I wanted

And I’d never get confronted for it

Because they’d stick up for me

If I were a boy

I think I could understand

How it feels to love a girl

I swear I’d be a better man

I’d listen to her

Cause I know how it hurts

When you lose the one you wanted

Cause he’s taken you for granted

And everything you had got destroyed

If I were a boy

I would turn off my phone

Tell everyone its broken

So they think

that I was sleeping alone

I’d put myself first

And make the rules as I go

Cause I know that she’d be faithful

Waiting for me to come home (to come home)

If I were a boy

I think I could understand

How it feels to love a girl

I swear I’d be a better man

I’d listen to her

Cause I know how it hurts

When you lose the one you wanted (wanted)

Cause he’s taken you for granted (granted)

And everything you had got destroyed

It’s a little too late for you to come back

Say its just a mistake

Think I forgive you like that

If you thought I would wait for you

You thought wrong

But you're just a boy

You don’t understand (yea you don’t understand)

How it feels to love a girl

Someday you’ll wish you were a better man

You don’t listen to her

You don’t care how it hurts

Until you lose the one you wanted

Cause you've taken her for granted

And everything you had got destroyed

But you're just a boy…

Music: 5/5
The melody is engaging all the way through. The composition is extremely clever, and uses the melody to support the lyrics. There is hidden humor here. For example, the chorus of "I won't hesitate" melodically hesitates! I love that.
It also serves the mood of the singer. He is gushing his thoughts, which come fast and furious. But when it comes to the main point, to love, is long and coming straight from the heart. Sometimes when you explain something, you talk fast than try to use a lot of different words and images. When you get your main point, you stress it and relish it. Excellent.

Lyrics: 5/5
Just read the following verse:

"I've been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror
And bending over backwards just to try to see it clearer
But my breath fogged up the glass
And so I drew a new face and laughed"

We can forgive the false rhyme, and there are some lines that don't make any sense to me. But a fantastic image like this? Game over! This alone is worth the whole song.

Recording/performance: 5/5
Jason's voice is beautiful. It has just the right innocence and sincerity to make this song work. I love the guitar playing, and the way the song builds. First you hit me with an interesting verse, a more interesting chorus, and it continues to get more interesting. Then, you roll out the fact that it is a round, when the backup singers are singing the refrain while Jason is singing the verse.
A brilliant piece of writing and arranging.

Go get this track.

I'm Yours Lyrics:
Well you done done me and you bet I felt it
I tried to get you but you're so hot that I melted
I fell right through the cracks
and now I'm trying to get back
Before the cool done run out
I'll be giving it my bestest
Nothing's going to stop me but divine intervention
I reckon it's again my turn to win some or learn some

I won't hesitate no more, no more
It cannot wait, I'm yours

Well open up your mind and see like me
Open up your plans and damn you're free
Look into your heart and you'll find love love love love
Listen to the music of the moment people dance and sing
We're just one big family
And It's our God-forsaken right to be loved love loved love loved

So I won't hesitate no more, no more
It cannot wait I'm sure
There's no need to complicate
Our time is short
This is our fate, I'm yours

Scooch on closer dear
And I will nibble your ear

I've been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror
And bending over backwards just to try to see it clearer
But my breath fogged up the glass
And so I drew a new face and laughed
I guess what I'm be saying is there ain't no better reason
To rid yourself of vanity and just go with the seasons
It's what we aim to do
Our name is our virtue

I won't hesitate no more, no more
It cannot wait
I'm your's

Well open up your mind and see like me
Open up your plans and damn you're free
Look into your heart and you'll find that the sky is yours
Please don't, please don't, please don't
There's no need to complicate
Cause our time is short
This this this is out fate, I'm yours!
When I first heard this song I was thinking, "oh not another one". The melody in the verse was one note repeating. There are about a million songs that start that way. But then I listened to the whole song and understood why it works.

Melody: 3 Stars.
As I said, the melody in the verse is completely ordinary and fairly boring. Then we got to the chorus, which showed some signs of life. As the song develops, it goes into a very effective key change for the bridge.
What was handled well here was the arrangement. Honestly, I didn't like the melody of the verse at all, but this shows the value of a contrasting hook. The chorus does go places, does have chord changes, and because of the contrast to the verse which goes absolutely nowhere, it is a very effective hook. The arranger knew just how to build the tension leading into the chorus to make the hook even more compelling.

That's the good news. Now for the lyrics.

Lyrics: 1 stars
I get the gist. It's about how we may change, expecting love to die. But it doesn't, it remains the same.
At least I think that's what it's about.
Because this is a classic example of lyrics that may mean something very powerful to the one who wrote them. They may be full of personal meanings, and written in the style of a classic poem to be analyzed in English class.
This song is not going to be analyzed in English class. I want to know what you're telling me, I want to understand what it is you're singing about. Please don't throw pretty-sounding imagery-loaded phrases such as "Gravity like a lunar landing" that don't seem to mean anything in context at me. Please stop contradicting yourself with phrases like "Everything will change, but love remains the same." Please stop using silly lyrics like "The city buzz sounds just like a fridge".
And just what does "I walk the streets through seven bars" mean anyway?

Performance and recording: 4 stars
This is an extremely well arranged song. I could hear every word clearly, and the vocal effects definitely helped Gavin's voice. He's a good singer, with a very expressive instrument. The energy arc gives this song every advantage, especially the bridge.
Honestly, without this quality performance and recording, I don't think this song would have gone too far.

The lyrics:
A thousand times I've seen you standing
Gravity like a lunar landing
You make me want to run till I find you
I shut the world away from here
I drift to you, you're all I hear
As everything we know fades to black

Half the time the world is ending
Truth is I am done pretending

I never thought that I
Had anymore to give
You're pushing me so far
Here I am without you
Drink to all that we have lost
Mistakes we have made
Everything will change
But love remains the same

I find a place where we escape
Take you with me for the space
The city buzz sounds just like a fridge
I walk the streets through seven bars
I have to find just where you are
The faces seem to blur
They're all the same

Half the time the world is ending
Truth is I am done pretending

I never thought that I
Had anymore to give
You're pushing me so far
Here I am without you
Drink to all that we have lost
Mistakes we have made
Everything will change
But love remains the same

So much more to say
So much to be done
Don't you trick me out
We shall overcome
It's all left still to play

We - should have the sun
Could have been inside
Instead we're over here

Half the time the world is ending
Truth is I am done pretending
Too much time too long defending
You and I are done pretending

I never thought that I
Had anymore to give
You're pushing me so far
Here I am without you
Drink to all that we have lost
Mistakes we have made
Everything will change
Everything will change

I, oh I,
I wish this could last forever
I, oh I,
As if we could last forever

Love remains the same

Melody - 4/5
Very strong hook. The verse and refrain are organically well crafted to work together. They are the good form of repetitive. Sometimes it can be monotonous. In this song, there is always a new element, whether it be a different melodic turn, way of phrasing or arrangement texture, that keeps the song growing. When this is done well, repetitive becomes almost hypnotic, and that can be a really good thing.

Then, the bridge really builds the song brilliantly. Good compositional work here.

Performance - 2/5
Here's where I had some trouble. I could not decipher the lyrics. It wasn't the mix, it was the performance. Sarah has adopted the habit of many singers in having an idiosyncratic pronunciation. That's fine, but on this track it rendered many of the important lines impossible for me to understand. She needs to enunciate better, even at the expense of her pronunciation style.

What good is saying something powerful if only part of your audience can actually make out your words? I'm sure after a few more listens I'd get them, but that's unfair to ask of a listener.

Vocally she has a unique instrument. She's not a Streisand style belter, and I think that's a huge asset to her. Her voice is immediately identifiable, and has lots of expression to it. There were a couple of pushes on high notes for her, where the rich timbre slightly changed. i would either work those through vocally to be seemless or take the key down, or cover it in the arrangement with some doubling effects.

Arrangement - Kudos on the arrangement. It builds a beautiful arc from the simple, slightly discordant, intro to the full pathos of the climax to the end. A lot of artistic thought went into this, and the peaceful opening with that one note that's just a little off conveys the unease of the song eloquently.

Recording - I (not an engineer, so take with the grain of salt) felt that the mix was fine. The first sound chosen was a little too "Casio home keyboard" for my taste, but that's nitpicking. The vocals were right up front in the mix, which I like, and the balance was smooth.

Summary: I liked this song, but I needed those lyrics. It was just too hard for me to figure out what the song was about. Sarah's voice has a fantastic richness of expression, and the music is innovative, dynamic and very satisfying.
